Meeting in Turkey - 5-8 March 2012

Meeting Summary

The first meeting of Comenius project Development of Total Communication Skills to Hearing Impaired Children in Order to Increasing Their Social Integration was held in Ankara, Turkey between 5-8 March 2012.

The children had the opportunity to use all forms language (written, verbal, and sign language) to communicate with each other. The photo exhibition themed as Total Communication was composed of children’s own photo works.

Visit to The Grand National Assembly of Turkey, school visits- Dogan Çaglar School for Children with Orthopedic Disabilities, Göreneller School of Children with Visual Impairments, Ankara tour, and Kappadokia visit, as a part of understanding life and culture in Turkey, were achieved with the participation of all partners.  Moreover, Ebru workshop (traditional art of painting), cooking and tasting traditional Turkish food were practiced.

An evaluation of the first meeting was done.  A tool for evaluating the project was filled by the partners. Project partners exchanged their experiences and ideas about the meeting and planned the next meeting in Hungary.

The Project meeting started on 5th of March, at 10:30 am in the parliament of Turkey called as The Grand National Assembly of Turkey. At 11:00, information about the parliament and its way of working was given by an officer in general assembly. After this introduction, Ankara deputy Tülay Selamoglu was visited. Press members took the photos of the visit.

Lunch was eaten at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. After the lunch, partners went to Kemal Yurtbilir Early Childhood Education Center Kindergarten and Primary School. Students of Turkey partner had a welcoming ceremony for the guests and they performed traditional drum show. The partners looked around the building.  Students from five different countries communicated with each other by total communication.

At the meeting salon of the school, partners made a presentation about their schools. As the host of the meeting, Turkish partners had also a presentation about Turkey and Ankara. After the presentations, cocktail was done. Each partner brought photos themed Total Communication. The photos were placed on the corridor walls of the school.

The second day of the meeting 6th of March started at 10:30 am.  As a part of understanding life and culture of Turkey, Atatürk Mausoleum, Haci Bayram Veli Mosque, the Assembly of Children and the Center of Children Working in the Streets, and old regions of Ankara were visited. A guide informed the visitors about Atatürk Mausoleum and Independence War Museum. Moreover, the partners visited Haci Bayram Veli Mosque and observed Islamic rituals. In the Assembly of Children, members of the assembly made a presentation and had gifts for the visitors. After the assembly, the Center of Children Working in the Streets was visited. The director of the center explained the objectives and working areas of the center. The visitors observed children working in the streets while studying there. Lunch was eaten in the Municipality of Ankara. After the lunch, old regions of Ankara Hamamönü, Pirinç Han, Ankara Castle were visited.

The 7th of March began early in the morning. As a part of understanding life and culture, Kappadokia region was visited. The bus left Ankara at 06:30. The bus stopped on the coast of Salt Lake. Partners had a short walk on Salt Lake. After Salt Lake, the bus arrived at Kappadokia region.  After visits to Uçhisar Castle and Güvercinlik Valley, lunch was eaten.
Then, Göreme Open Air Museum and the churches belong to the early Christians were visited.  The partners also visited Avanos. A demonstration about traditional pottery of Kappodikia region was watched. One of the students made clay under the supervision of the potter. Tour bus left Kappadokia at 17:00 pm.

In the last day of the meeting, 8th March, Dogan Çaglar School for Children with Orthopedic Disabilities, and Göreneller School of Children with Visual Impairments were visited to understand special education system of Turkey. During the school visits, the teachers working in these schools gave information about the schools and answered the questions.  After the school visits, the partners went to Kemal Yurtbilir Early Childhood Education Center Kindergarten and Primary School. Ebru, which is also known as paper marbling, workshop was done. Ebru teacher gave information about Ebru, its history and showed how to make Ebru. After this introduction, each school painted its own painting with the participation of teachers and students. Then, the papers were left to dry. After Ebru painting, in the dining hall of the school, one of the school personnel showed how to make traditional meals such as manti and sarma. Students from the partner schools participated to cooking activity. Lunch including traditional Turkish food was eaten.

After the lunch, the evaluation of Turkey meeting was done. Each partner filled a tool for evaluating the project. Project partners exchanged their experiences and ideas about the meeting.  Partners spoke about Hungary meeting. Each reported the number of teachers and students who will participate Hungary meeting. It was decided that each partner will have a presentation about total communication.

The date of the next meeting was decided as 21-25th of May.
